DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND MY CONTROL, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Thank you to all those who showed an interest.
Well, I think we finally turned the corner and hopefully there will be no more snow for the next 3 months at least. There is already "ice out" on Lake Pepin on the Mississippi river in Lake City, MN down south. Last I checked we still have 27" of ice on local lakes including Millacs. With the pike opener basically only 3 weeks away, we need some 70 degree temps to be maintained for a good week or two or we will be pushing ice bergs out of the way in order to reach our favorite spots. Either that or carry augers with us land on a berg and drill some holes. (It wouldn't be the first time)
Enough about the weather, we will have to just take it as it comes and deal with it. With opener coming up, repairs are starting to come in fast. A few late rod orders wanting to be done by opener that are just not going to get done, much to the customer's disapointment, but you can only do what you can do.
I have been working feverishly to get the agenda finalized for the River Rats Riverside and will be having a meeting on Monday and Tuesday with Doug Tripamer and Russ Philstrom and then my staff to get it totally straightened out. I do know we will have more than 5 "booth" set ups available so if you want to sell your rods and Or components, get a hold of me asap so we can get them reserved. I am also going to try to reserve a meeting room at the local eatery so those wishing to have dinner on their own at a very good restaraunt with great food and excellent service they wont have to wait to get a table.
Remember for those who are not participating in the fishing tournament on Sunday, we will be having an open forum to discuss what ever comes up. I have thought about breaking the folks up into small groups and giving them a subject to discuss, then after an hour or so, a spokesperson from each group can give a report of what was discussed and what idea's they found. If not that way, we will just have a facilitator and we can toss some idea's around about what ever comes up. The reason for the facilitator is that some subjects can be pretty contraversial, such as spine, spline or straightest line. I have no doubt that as adults we we can hold civilized discussion, but just in case someone gets a little heated under the collar.
I am also working on finding a "key Note" speaker, preferably a vendor to discuss shipping cost's, delays, backorders, and handling costs. Also now that the event is closer we will be looking for more donations for the raffle.
So, you can see there is still plenty for me to do, but will hopefully get things finalized next Monday and Tuesday. Coordinating one of thee events, especially a 3 day event can get difficult with one of the hardest parts no knowing how many folks will actually attend. But this is the fun part of my "job". I get a chance to talk to some old friends and make new ones in the process of lining up presenter's, idea's and getting time to "git er done". So please be patient with me for another week and I will get everything published.
One last thing is when you check the event on and of the numerous groups I post the event in, is to check the discussion tab once you click on the event. This is where you will find the most up to date information. Enjoy the great weather and I ll be talking to you soon.
Here it is April 8 and the temp right now is 4 degrees with the forecast of 2-3 inches of snow through tomorrow morning. The 15 day forecast is calling for two days above 32. At this rate the ice and snow should be gone by July 13 for the big get together.
The Harbor Master's down stream are having trouble with the constant re-freeze as the ice flow rips their docks right out of the water. They have placed barges in certain spots to try and redirect the ice flow. Ok, enough complaining about the cold because you know in 2 months everyone will be complaining about the heat and humidity.
For all you new builders and some of us old folks, if you have not subscribed to Mudhole's Newsletter yet, I highly recommend it. I have at times shared some of their articles on my FB page (SureSet Custom Fishing Rods). Extremely informative articles and tips on not only Rodbuilding but Team Mudhole as well. I have at times used some of their suggested "shortcuts" on my rods when I am in a hurry. Trim bands being one of them. They also have access to their website and some of the newest technology in rod building. So, at the very least check it out.
Another great newsletter can be got from Batson. Again another wealth of information. Follow Team Rainshadow through the tournament trail as well as find out about the newest products that Batson is famous for producing.
Alot of Vendors and manufacturers have some sort of newsletter and I encourage new builders to check them out. Other places to learn are of course the FB groups of which there are many. One of the newest on the scene is The Custom Rod Builders Alliance. This group came on strong, opening with over 1,000 members. Everything from buy and sell, pictures of builds, questions and answers, the Alliance is sure to continue to grow and already is a great learning group. The creator of the group is a very experienced builder who also has numerous video's on You Tube. The best video he has done to date (in my opinion) is on How to make Carbon Fiber Grips from beginning to end. It is very well done and easy to follow. Make sure you check it out if you like carbon fiber.
Last but not least, The River Rats Rod Group on FB may only have just over 100 members, the River Rats are putting on one of the best get togethers this year. If you have not checked it out yet, there is a lot of information on this page, SureSet Custom Rod page on FB, the Events tab on the Custom Rod Guild FB page. I am still in the process of finalizing the agenda for this 2 1/2 day event, but you will certainly not be disappointed if you come. Most important is that the proceeds of this event will be going to the Homeless and Wounded Warriors of MN. So please be generous when stuffing the "free will donations" cans placed around the event hall. They will also have a booth selling their wares and handing out more information about the organization. We have everything from cork grip construction demo's, static testing seminars to spiral (Acid Wrap) seminars. So save yourself $5.00 today and fill out the registration form on this site. The cost is only $10.00 per person, kids under 14 are free. Just indicate in the signature box how many folks you are bringing with you and you can either send the money via Pay Pal or just wait and pay at the door. If you don't register prior to July 12 you will have to pay the door charge. Two catered meals provided , raffle tickets on sale constantly for some really great prizes. (I have already started receiving raffle prizes from Vendors). If you have any questions, you can contact me here on this site, on FB or at firstname.lastname@example.org or if you want to talk directly, 651.674.3735. So before you leave this site, REGISTER NOW and then you don't have to worry about it. Talk to you all later.
